State of Emergency Declared in Spain's El Hierro Island Amid Migrant Surge
Authorities on the Spanish island of El Hierro have declared a state of emergency following the arrival of thousands of migrants, as local facilities struggle to cope.
Authorities on the Spanish island of El Hierro have declared a state of emergency following a significant influx of migrants reaching the island's shores since the beginning of November.
More than 3,300 people have arrived using approximately 30 boats, placing immense strain on the island's infrastructure.
Alpidio Armas, president of the island's council, stated that the current situation requires urgent government coordination. He noted that local shelter facilities and the hospital are currently operating under inadequate conditions.
Local authorities have also issued warnings regarding an approaching storm, which poses a severe threat to the safety of migrants currently at sea.
The archipelago had experienced a decline in migrant arrivals over the past ten months before the recent surge in numbers.
