Egypt Prepares to Pilot Cash Subsidy System in Beheira Governorate

El Fadaly News Desk ·

The Egyptian government is set to launch a pilot program transitioning from traditional commodity rations to a direct cash subsidy system to improve social protection efficiency.

Egypt is preparing to implement a new pilot program within its food subsidy system, shifting from fixed commodity rations to direct cash payments. The trial phase is scheduled to begin in Beheira Governorate starting this coming January.

The new system aims to provide families with the flexibility to choose their own essential needs rather than being restricted to specific items. Major retail chains will participate in the program to facilitate the redemption process.

Economic experts suggest that this transition could improve the efficiency of public resource management while reducing waste associated with the storage and transportation of subsidized goods.

The government acknowledges the challenge of maintaining the purchasing power of these cash payments. Consequently, inflation rates will be taken into account when determining the value of support provided to families.

This initiative seeks to modernize social protection frameworks and ensure that subsidies reach eligible citizens more effectively, building upon the current system that serves millions of people nationwide.
