Paraguay President Resigns Following Major Bank Collapse and Financial Crisis

El Fadaly News Desk ·

President Santiago Peña has stepped down amid a severe financial crisis triggered by the collapse of Ueno Bank, which left half the population's savings inaccessible.

Paraguay is facing a significant political shift today as President Santiago Peña announced his resignation. The decision follows a period of intense financial instability currently gripping the nation.

The crisis was precipitated by the collapse of the prominent Ueno Bank, which resulted in the freezing of savings for nearly half of the country's population. The Central Bank has intervened to regain control after discovering a severe capital deficit within the institution.

President Peña faced mounting pressure from opposition lawmakers, who accused him of mismanagement and conflicts of interest. In a video statement, the President apologized to the public, emphasizing his commitment to the stability of the financial system.

Authorities have moved to hold those responsible accountable, arresting eight senior bank officials linked to the collapse. Vice President Pedro Alliana is expected to assume power following formal parliamentary approval.

The country is now entering a transitional phase aimed at stabilizing the economic and political landscape, as questions remain regarding the new government's ability to resolve this major financial emergency.
