Egypt to Pilot New Cash Subsidy System in Beheira Starting January 2027

El Fadaly News Desk ·

The Egyptian Ministry of Supply is set to launch a cash-based subsidy pilot in Beheira to replace traditional commodity rations, aiming to improve distribution efficiency.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the Egyptian Ministry of Supply is preparing to implement a cash subsidy system to replace the traditional in-kind support, starting in January 2027.

As reported, the Beheira Governorate will serve as the initial pilot site. Families will receive cash payments instead of the standard sugar and oil rations, allowing them greater flexibility to purchase essential items.

The spokesperson for the Cabinet of Ministers, as cited by Al Arabiya, stated that the subsidy value will be calculated based on the number of family members, while accounting for inflation rates to maintain citizens' purchasing power.

The new system allows families to choose from a diverse list of goods, including meat, poultry, eggs, and other basic commodities.

The government emphasized that the initiative aims to increase transparency and fairness in subsidy distribution rather than reducing the number of beneficiaries. The pilot in Beheira will serve as a benchmark for the system's success before expanding to other governorates.
