Israel: Gadi Eizenkot Tasked with Forming New Government
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has tasked Gadi Eizenkot with forming the new government after he secured the recommendation of 67 Knesset members.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has officially tasked the leader of the 'Yashar' party, Gadi Eizenkot, with forming the next government, following an election that failed to grant any single camp a clear parliamentary majority.
The appointment follows Eizenkot receiving recommendations from blocs representing 67 members of the Knesset, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received recommendations from only 46 members.
Eizenkot now faces the significant challenge of translating these initial recommendations into concrete support to establish a stable governing coalition.
Avigdor Lieberman has expressed his support for Eizenkot’s nomination, though he simultaneously declared his refusal to rely on Arab parties to form the government.
The prime minister-designate has a 28-day window to complete the formation process, with the possibility of a 14-day extension granted by the President if necessary.
