Google Retreats: New Restrictions on AI Tools in Schools
Google has decided to stop the automatic activation of AI features for students globally, responding to educational institutions' demands for more control.

In a surprising move, Google announced fundamental changes to its education-focused products, deciding to disable AI tools by default for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
This decision follows widespread pressure and criticism, particularly after inquiries from U.S. lawmakers regarding the automatic imposition of these features. According to media reports, activating the 'Gemini' model and features integrated into the 'Classroom' platform will now be at the sole discretion of school administrators.
Chris Phillips, Google's Vice President of Education, explained that the current nature of the search engine makes it difficult to separate AI from search results, noting that schools opting to block this technology might face challenges in their students' access to the search engine.
This move follows concerns from several school districts, such as New York and Los Angeles, regarding student privacy and the impact on education, emphasizing that technology should remain an aid to teachers rather than a replacement.
