Digital Screen Hacking in Egypt: How a Billboard Became a Global Vulnerability

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior released details regarding the hacking of a digital billboard on the 26th of July Axis in Giza, which was exploited to display inappropriate content. Investigations revealed that the screen belongs to a company contracted with an international firm whose digital platform suffered a cyberattack, causing the same content to appear on screens across multiple countries simultaneously.

Modern advertising companies rely on centralized platforms to manage thousands of screens remotely, which saves time but creates a technical vulnerability. According to Rehab El-Rahmawy, a cybersecurity professor at the Military Academy, the attack does not necessarily target the screen itself, but rather the servers or administrator accounts with broadcasting privileges, expanding the damage across a wider geographical area.

El-Rahmawy pointed out that attack vectors range from phishing and weak passwords to exploiting software vulnerabilities in unpatched operating systems. To prevent such incidents, she emphasized the necessity of securing the entire management system through multi-factor authentication, strict access controls, and regular software updates to ensure advertising networks remain protected from external breaches.
