The German Dachshund: From Hunting Dog to Cultural Icon

The Bremen Art Hall is currently hosting an exhibition titled "Dachshund. An Icon Goes for a Walk," running through March 2027, which highlights the unique cultural history of the breed known for its long body and short legs.

According to media reports, the breed is famously linked to great artists, most notably Pablo Picasso and his dog Lump. Other prominent figures like Andy Warhol and David Hockney have also featured the dog as a muse in their creative works.

Historically, the breed transcended its role as a hunting companion to become a symbol of German identity. It was owned by emperors, used in political propaganda during the World Wars, and served as the official mascot for the 1972 Olympics.

Known by various names such as 'Teckel' or the 'sausage dog', the breed remains a subject of fascination. Curator Annette Rickert notes that the dog's iconic shape and presence in art history make it a compelling subject for study.
