The Gulf Petrochemical Journey: From Flared Gas to Global Market Leadership

In the mid-20th century, associated gas in Gulf oil fields was burned as waste. Eventually, regional nations adopted a vision to utilize it as a feedstock for advanced manufacturing, launching a sector that now produces essential plastics, fertilizers, and fibers.

The 1973 October War served as a turning point, as surging oil prices provided the capital needed for massive infrastructure. According to media reports, Saudi Arabia led this shift by establishing 'SABIC', while Kuwait had pioneered the sector in 1963 with ammonia and urea production.

Industrial paths varied based on gas composition; Qatar focused on urea, while Saudi Arabia and the UAE prioritized polyethylene and propylene. This specialization cemented the region's role as a key global supplier, despite current challenges from market volatility and international competition.
